The Escalante National Monument is divided into three sections each of which exhibit dissimilar characteristics but expose similar sequences of geologic formations. Jurassic through Cretaceous aged rocks are most common to the Grand Staircase, Kaiparowits Plateau, and Escalante Canyons. The Grand Staircase and Kaiparowits Plateau are separated by the Cockscomb Monocline and the Kaiparowits Plateau and Escalante Canyons are separated by the Escalante Monocline. The eastern boundary of the Escalante Canyons is defined by the Waterpocket Fold monocline. (See Chapter 1 for a more detailed summary of the national monument).Chapter 1 provides an overview of the Escalante National Monument. Chapter 2 begins the geologic description of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument focusing on stratigraphy. Chapter 3, 4, and 5 focuses on geologic road trips through each section of thee Escalante National Monument: Grand Staircase (Chapter 3), Kaiparowits Plateau (Chapter 4), and Escalante Canyons (Chapter 5). Some road trips cross boundaries between sections and were included where it was thought they fit in best with the appropriate road log and monumental section. Chapter 6 summarizes selected sites to visit within the national monument. Corresponding monumental sections on where the sites are located are provided in the Table of Contents.
